When mining oil, we first get raw form of the energy source that has to be refined into many compounds that each find some application in life today. Crude oil does not just happen to be there, its formed by dead organisms undergoing decomposition over millions of years deep into the earth. The earth experiences some movement under the plates and in result the movements trap oil and natural gas between the reservoir rocks.
Without the oil companies the energy industry would not be what it is today. To have oil, exploration followed by extraction has to take place and it’s all the work of oil companies. Geologists are the professionals that are entrusted with the finding of oil, this is the exploration part. They are tasked with finding areas that have good conditions that ,would trap oil. The gravitational change in the earth’s crust will change from time to time and that needs to be observed by the geologists as it could indicate the direction in which the oil flows. 3D and 4D seismic imaging can also be used in the locating of oil in the reservoir rocks of the earth. This kind of imaging works by sending some shocks deep into the crust of the earth.
Reflections of the waves are sent back to the surface of the earth and then they are analyzed. When the results of the exploration has revealed that a there are oil deposits that are worth mining , the area is marked with buoys if located under a water body and if on land the coordinates are marked. Identifying an area to extract oil is one thing and mining is another. The geologist continues with their work by marking perimeter boundaries of the area, and also coming up with report s of the environmental impact. A company will only start to mine when they have been awarded the rights by the authorities in charge of the area with the deposits. If the company has been awarded the rights, it will start by clearing trees and any obstruction of movement to the area. The company then proceeds to build access roads for ease of moving machinery.
Water is needed for the drilling process and if there is no water nearby the company will first drill boreholes. The excavation process will have a lot of mud and rocks being extracted which needs to be dumped, the company has to dig pits for this disposal. Around the main drilling hole, a pit will be dug to allow access to the main drilling area and finally the drilling can be done.
